Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino provided a cheeky verdict when asked if he has trust in the VAR technology and the Argentine manager said he “believes in the car but not who is driving it”.
Var has been in the spotlight since the recently concluded Liverpool – Tottenham Hotspur game when they incorrectly disallowed Luiz Diaz’s goal in the Reds’ 2-1 defeat to Spurs.
Since then, there has been a huge uproar about whether the technology actually benefits the game. Much of the talk has transpired due to the manner in which Liverpool lost the game but technology is there for a reason and at the N17 that day, it let the game down.
The former Spurs manager has insisted that he is in favour of technology but claimed he would only keep the offside and goalline aspects of it, (h/t BBC) as he told reporters:
“I trust the car, but it is the driver that is the problem. We understand people make mistakes; it is not easy. I think when the referee makes mistakes, we can all accept them. When it happens with technology, it is difficult to understand.”
Mauricio Pochettino is right on target when he says that VAR isn’t the issue; rather, it’s the people handling it. After all, we have all heard the audio clip between the referees in which they admit that there was a clear goal and that they had the opportunity to stop the match but chose not to. They are now bearing the consequences, as the VAR referee has been banned from officiating any Liverpool matches. These little things may make or break a game, and the Reds were the team that suffered.
Let’s hope that it doesn’t happen in our match because Nicolas Jackson’s second goal was wrongly disallowed when we played Brighton & Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup.
