Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino lauded summer signing Cole Palmer following the Blues’ 4-1 comeback victory over Burnley in the Premier League. Palmer scored his first goal for the Blues as Chelsea rallied from a goal down to claim three vital points.
The 21-year-old Manchester City academy product confidently converted a penalty in the second half after Raheem Sterling had been fouled by Burnley’s Vitinho. Palmer’s goal put Chelsea forward after an Ameen Al-Dakhil own goal for Burnley put Chelsea level just before half-time.
In the post-match conference covered by BBC, Mauricio Pochettino was full of praise for the England international who made only his second league start for Chelsea in the Burnley clash. It is clear that we have a real star on our hands.
Despite his youth, Pochettino has been hugely impressed by Palmer’s intelligence, technique and decision-making. The manager believes Palmer boasts the personality and skill set to be a difference-maker going forward.
“He is a very talented player and he has the quality and he surprised me when I arrived because it was the day before the transfer window closed. the way the he reads the situations and what the team needs in every situation, he can be the player who can link with his team-mates. Still very very young but with great personality and he has the talent and the quality which we saw today.”
Chelsea signed Cole Palmer from Manchester City this summer in a £42.5m deal. He made his debut as a substitute in the Blues 0-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest. Despite Palmer’s strong performance, it was the veteran Raheem Sterling who was the star of the show. It was his deflected cross that resulted in Burnley’s own goal. Palmer also scored his penalty from a Sterling foul.
In the 65th minute, Sterling scored himself to put the Blues forward 3-1. Finally, he was also involved in Chelsea’s final goal. Nicolas Jackson’s finisher came off of a Connor Gallagher assist which had ultimately come from Sterling.
After struggling since the start of the season, finally, the Stamford Bridge boys are coming back on track. They have won three matches back to back with yesterday’s clash against Burnley being their best performance yet.
Mauricio Pochettino was also immensely happy with his young guns’s amazing performance.
“I’m so pleased because I think the players deserved the victory, we haven’t got what we deserved from the beginning of the season. But I think today was a solid performance. We are a young team, too many new players on the team so you have to build the confidence and the structure of the team. We are playing well but we need to improve and be more confident in front of goal. I am happy and at the moment we are building our confidence and three victories in the last three games is important for this young group.
