Chelsea defender Thiago Silva has denied rumours he has retired from international duty, insisting it was not his choice to miss Brazil’s recent fixtures.
Silva has not been called up by Brazil since the 2022 World Cup, leading to speculation the 39-year-old had ended his international career. But the veteran centre-back moved to clarify that is not the case in an interview with ESPN Brasil via X (h/t Sport Witness).
The Chelsea star explained that he remains willing to represent Brazil if selected by the national team bosses. While disappointed at his recent overlooked status, Silva understands it’s the manager’s decision. If anything, the Chelsea ace shows his considerable experience in taking setbacks to the chin and dealing with the issue diplomatically.
“I didn’t make any decision. Let’s make that very clear. I didn’t make any decision not to go to the national team, It’s not my decision. I’m always available when the CBF[Brazilian FA] calls up. It’s already stated at the end of the line that it’s a call-up, you have to go. But so far I haven’t been told anything. I just haven’t been called for these recent opportunities.“
The veteran has 113 caps for Brazil, but his advancing age has seen a transition to younger players. However, Silva’s experience and leadership could still benefit Brazil amid a rocky spell of form. Brazil have lost three of their last four matches. The recent setback against Uruguay where Darin Nunez made a fool of the Brazilian defenders once again shows the lack of leadership in the nation’s backline.
The Chelsea man would relish the chance to return and aid the team’s rebuilding process. But for now, he remains fully committed to performing for his club while awaiting a potential Brazil recall. Silva was adamant that suggestions he had actively chosen to retire were wide of the mark. It is good news for us as it shows the veteran still has much left in his tank and will be raring to go.
At 39, his Brazil days may be numbered. But Silva issued a firm reminder that he is still available should his country need him again.
