“We need to keep believing,” Chelsea boss’s first words as club’s winless streak continues

The Premier League once again delivered a classic in Chelsea FC's 4-4 draw with Manchester City.

Mauricio Pochettino feels Chelsea’s performances haven’t been bad and they need to keep believing

Despite losing 1-0 to Aston Villa, Mauricio Pochettino remains optimistic regarding Chelsea’s performance and feels they have been a better side. He wants the fans to keep believing.

The Argentine manager oversaw his third defeat in six Premier League games with just one win as the Blues stand 14th in the table. Although they produced several chances and were undoubtedly the superior team against a high-line Aston Villa, the Blues’ wastefulness cost them the game.

Mykhaylo Mudryk made his second start of the game and caught the eye, creating a few chances. Chelsea certainly regrets missing them, as Ollie Watkins’ solitary goal in the 73rd minute was enough to hand the visiting team three points.

Now the Blues are set to miss Nicolas Jackson due to suspension after getting his fifth yellow card, while Malo Gusto received a straight red card in the 58th minute.

Now pressure is increasing with each poor result, but the Argentine manager has remained assertive and feels the players should keep believing, as he said speaking to Sky Sports after the game:

“Our performances aren’t bad. We need to keep believing.”

Here Maurico Pochettino wants to convey this is a long-term project and fans need to realise they cannot expect instant improvement anymore because if we want to build something we need to start from the bottom.

We have improved a lot but the problem has remained missing goal-scoring chances in games has cost us points, and when the opponent scores, our morale goes down and we evidently play poorly.

We cannot always blame the manager if the players are failing to score goals. But at one point, we can surely question the club’s strategy to sign players that aren’t finished products.

Now that Jackson and Gusto are out for the next game, the Argentine manager will have to be bolder with his selection for the next match. It’s time for him to start taking risks and creating chaos. Armando Broja’s return to training is good news but it remains to be seen what we do at right-back.

If the season was going well, the EFL Cup third-round clash against Brighton & Hove Albion on 27 September wouldn’t have been as big a deal as it is now. But right now, that competition seems to be one of our only two chances of getting anything meaningful from this season.
