Mauricio Pochettino has stated that Nicolas Jackson needs time to settle down and compared Vinicius Junior’s earlier seasons at Real Madrid to the Senegalese youngster’s current time at Chelsea.
Jackson’s start to life at Chelsea hasn’t been exciting after the centre-forward failed to hit the ground running with just one goal in five games, which raised doubts if Chelsea have once again failed to find an established striker.
However, Chelsea’s main concern has been a lack of clinical strikers. Last season the club managed to score just 38 Premier League goals, and finished 12th in the league. This season has been no different and Jackson, despite all the intelligent runs that he makes has been wasteful in front of goal.
Nonetheless, he is just 22, and he will eventually evolve once he settles into the league. But Chelsea’s ability to locate proven strikers in recent years has been poor, as their numerous signings have failed to remain consistent. The one player who actually seemed to be consistent was Tammy Abraham but Thomas Tuchel did not seem to fancy him.
Nicolas Jackson possesses great traits and has showcased it on quite a few occasions but it is clear that he is a work in progress. Pochettino feels that he should be given time and compared his situation to Vinicius’s early campaigns at Real Madrid, (h/t) (Football.London), and said:
“Jackson is a fantastic player, but he needs to be relaxed in front of goal. Remember, Vinicius arrived and, after two or three seasons, started to perform.”
“Always we forget we are talking about young players. You can blame me or blame us, and you can talk about tactics, but they need time. There’s no doubt we have amazing talent, but they need time to settle, and, for sure, they will start to perform in the way we expect.”
It’s a good comparison, but when Vinicius joined Real Madrid, he was 18, while Jackson is 22, and the latter already has enough experience. But certainly, the Premier League demands more intensity compared to other leagues, and it is understandable that Jackson will take time to find his feet here.
The Brazilian took three years to hit his groove. We hope Jackson doesn’t take these many years because we are desperate for a goalscorer, and hopefully, the Senegalese will improve with each game.
