A View From The Bridge

Spanish ace ready to call it quits at Chelsea in January

Chelsea star Marc Cucurella is ready to leave the club in the January transfer window

According to The Sun, Chelsea star Marc Cucurella is ready to leave the club in the 2024 January transfer window.

The 25-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2022 and has failed to secure himself a regular spot in the playing XI. Currently working under his fourth different manager at the club, Cucurella has amassed just 34 appearances across all competitions, making two assists in the process.

The likes of Ben Chilwell and Ian Maatsen are both ahead of the Spaniard in Mauricio Pochettino’s pecking order and it does not appear likely to change anytime soon. Having come close to leaving the Bridge last summer, the player appears to be increasingly delusional about life in west London.

Cucurella was close to joining Manchester United last summer but the deal fell through late on and the Red Devils eventually landed Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham Hotspur on loan. Given that staying put at Chelsea has not reaped any benefits, Cucurella is visibly frustrated.

He has already informed Pochettino of the same but whether it will lead to the Argentine giving him opportunities remains to be seen. After all, the 25-year-old has played just one game this season, against AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup. His inclusion in the game was a curious decision indeed given that he was close to moving to United and playing him on the night cup-tied him.

Chelsea next play Brighton & Hove Albion this week in the Carabao Cup. It is perhaps fitting that Cucurella could feature against his former side, one that has moved on to bigger and better things since his £62m move to Stamford Bridge. Anything less than a starting spot on the night should more or less spell the end for the Spniard’s career in Blue.

A move to Real Madrid could also materialise should it be deemed feasible. The Spanish giants are eyeing a loan deal for the second half of the season and Cucurella is expected to be in favour of a return to his homeland. Cesar Azpilicueta and Kepa Arrizabalaga have both enjoyed fresh leases of life back in La Liga and there is no reason why Cucurella should not enjoy the same fortune.
