Reece James now Chelsea captain, to prevent Real Madrid move

Chelsea have made defender Reece James their captain in order to prevent possible Real Madrid

Former English footballer Glen Johnson in an interview with Ggrecon revealed that it’s highly possible that Chelsea made Reece James their captain in order to prevent any possible Real Madrid transfer. He said:

“Maybe Chelsea made him captain because of Real Madrid’s interest in him. Any player’s going to be interested in joining Real Madrid and anybody who says they’re not are lying.Reece obviously loves Chelsea and I believe it would be a very tough decision for him to leave. If the club wants to compete with the best teams in the world, then you can’t allow your best players to move to Real Madrid.”

James has already signed a contract that keeps him at Stamford Bridge until 2028. If we go by his interview with BBC in July 2022, it seemed he was content playing for the Blues.

“I’d like to think [my future is at Stamford Bridge]. I grew up as a Chelsea fan and you know I made my name playing for Chelsea, the club I’ve always supported but I don’t see why anything would change.

“I play for Chelsea now and I’m enjoying it. It is an exciting time. Not much changes from the players or the management’s point of view. I still want to win every competition and every game. There’s no reason why we can’t do that.”

Chelsea had a complete overhaul of their team this year. The team is primarily built on young blood. James is one of the most important parts of this team and moreover, he is a graduate of the Cobham Academy, which makes him an automatic favourite among the club’s fans.

It seems Chelsea have recognised his potential hence they made him captain in order to appease him. It is safe to say that this is something he would have desperately wanted since Cesar Azpilicueta’s exit this summer.

Real Madrid signed Fran Garcia for the left-back position this summer but they did not bring in a new face on the opposite flank. There, they have Dani Carvajal as their first-team option, who is 31 years old and arguably on the decline.

Hence, it makes sense that they targeted one of England’s finest players to sort out that position for the present and the future. He is still 23 years old and his best years are ahead of him, granted that he keeps himself fit.
