Premier League giants Chelsea are ready to listen to offers for Marc Cucurella amid interest from Real Madrid
Chelsea star Marc Cucurella might be on the move in the next transfer window. According to ESPN, the Blues are open to offers for the Spanish left-back, as he has seen a decline in his game time since manager Mauricio Pochettino took over the role in July.
The 25-year-old moved to Stamford Bridge last summer in a massive £62 million deal after an impressive season with Brighton and Hove Albion. However, his performances at Chelsea have not lived up to the high price tag or the club’s expectations, leading to him being sidelined by the manager in favour of Ben Chilwell.
Despite making an appearance in a 1-0 Carabao Cup victory against his former team, it appears that Pochettino has lost faith in the defender. Cucurella has yet to play a single minute in the Premier League this season, with Levi Colwill even filling in as a makeshift left-back in Chilwell’s absence.
As it’s evident that the former Getafe star doesn’t have a future under Pochettino at Chelsea, the club has decided to make him available for transfer in the hopes of recovering some of the funds spent under new owner Todd Boehly.
There is a chance that the left-back might return to Spain, with Real Madrid emerging as a possible candidate to sign him in the upcoming January transfer window. Madrid signed Fran Garcia during the summer transfer window. However, the youngster’s struggle to adjust to his new environment has led coach Carlo Ancelotti to reintegrate Ferland Mendy into the starting lineup in recent matches.
The Los Blancos are considering the possibility of bringing in Cucurella, but they would favour a loan deal with an option to buy included, whereas Chelsea would demand a permanent transfer. The Blues recently sent goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to the Santiago Bernabeu, and the left-back could now follow suit.
During the previous summer transfer window, Chelsea were willing to loan out their prized asset to Manchester United for the season, but the deal fell apart at the last minute. Since the Red Devils signed Sergio Reguilon, it is unlikely that they will revive their interest in another left-back during the upcoming transfer window.
The absence of playing time for Cucurella under Pochettino speaks volumes, and hence, it would be logical if he showed interest in considering a January move to rejuvenate his career. Still, the player revealed in July that he wanted to stay and fight for his place.
