“That is the wrong way to think”- Chelsea boss sends clear warning to new signing

Mauricio Pochettino has told Chelsea new signing Cole Palmer he won’t be guaranteed regular game-time

Mauricio Pochettino revealed Chelsea’s new signing Cole Palmer won’t be guaranteed regular game time following his acquisition from Manchester City.

The Blues paid £42.5 million to complete the signing of a City academy player who has been viewed as an important part of the squad. However, at Manchester City, Palmer wasn’t a regular starter and made only 19 appearances during his time there.

The 21-year-old Chelsea player hopes to play frequently as the Blues are also hoping to sign an attacking player before the end of the transfer window.

However, the Argentine manager has made it clear that he will control his game time and will enable those players who merit it to participate in every match, (h/t Metro) as he said in a press conference prior to the match against Nottingham:

‘‘If someone guarantees some player to play well, that is not the case here. The player needs to come, perform, and let us manage. And then, if he deserves to play, he will. I am sure it was the same at City. But for us, even when you pay big money for a player at Chelsea, it doesn’t mean you are guaranteed to play. That is the wrong way to think.”

It’s reasonable to assume that Pochettino wants to give every player an opportunity, and those who thrive will undoubtedly earn a spot in the starting XI for every game. Palmer has outstanding attributes and has played in the Premier League, so Chelsea did a great job by signing him rather than an overseas player.

His performance will certainly speak volumes if he deserves regular game time in Pochettino’s eyes. At City, he wasn’t a regular starter because Pep Guardiola already had the likes of Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden. At Chelsea, we only have Noni Madueke, who operates from the right, so we can see both Palmer and Madueke rotate for game time.
