Mauricio Pochettino admitted he was forced to relax Thiago Silva after their stalemate with Bournemouth, leaving Chelsea just one win in five Premier League games of ar this season.
Chelsea had Robert Sanchez to thank at full-time following his heroics between the posts as he denied clear-cut chances to the south coast side. The Blues had 16 attempts themselves, but they largely looked like a disjointed squad with a lack of understanding between each other. This frustrated Silva as he had no players to play the ball forward to.
Half of Chelsea’s players were high up the pitch, which forced the centre-back to play sideways and resulted in Chelsea being unable to make the most of it. Given the lack of penetration, Silva’s frustrations are understandable.
This resulted in the Brazilian star displaying his infuriation to his teammates, and Pochettino had to step up to calm down the 38-year-old. When asked by a reporter why the experienced Brazil international was so frustrated, (h/t Metro) the Argentine manager said:
‘’We were talking with Thiago about being more relaxed because sometimes the defensive player wants to help the team score and we need to be clever. Then the game was open; the last 15, 20 minutes, I think we wanted to win, and sometimes we started to disorganize our defence with the full back so high, which gave the possibility to make some counterattacks in transition.”
Silva was compelled to play back to Sanchez due to his teammate’s lack of help, which was evident during the game. This will undoubtedly aggravate the player. If he had played long balls, Bournemouth might have regained possession because most of the players were higher up the pitch to receive the ball. All we needed was one good deflection and the cards to align in our favour.
As Pochettino said, we looked disorganised in the game, and it was true. There was a lack of involvement by other players in the game. These are small mistakes we need to rectify if we want to win games.
