“He knew the project”- Mauricio Pochettino reveals why veteran ace is still at Chelsea this season

Mauricio Pochettino reveals Chelsea wanted Thiago Silva to remain at the club this summer

Mauricio Pochettino confirmed Chelsea wanted Thiago Silva to remain at the club, and the Brazilian centre-back was convinced by the Blues’ project for this season. The Brazilian is one of the few senior stars who

Silva, who joined Chelsea in 2020, has remained a consistent presence at the club and played a major part in helping the Blues win the Champions League in the 2020–21 season. He remains our leader at the back despite not donning the armband on a regular basis.

The 39-year-old extended his contract last season despite the Blues’ ongoing struggles on the pitch. He has been vocal about Chelsea’s poor season but continues to occupy a major position in Pochettino’s plans for the Blues.

The former Paris Saint-Germain star, who turned 39 yesterday, still remains a preferred option this season, with Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill partnering him at the back. It is also understood that the Brazilian centre-back isn’t afraid to point out the manager’s tactics, as sometimes he imposes his own twist on the Argentine’s tactical methods.

But Pochettino claims Silva believes in the club’s project, and the West Londoners wanted him to remain at Chelsea, which saw him sign a new contract, as he further told Scott Trotter, quoted by Fabrizio Romano:

“Why is Thiago Silva here? Because he wants to stay here—as he stayed here because the club wanted him—they extended the contract. Thiago knew the project very well when he extended it. He knew the project.”

Since he joined the team, Silva has been a very reliable player. Because of the high bar he has set for himself, it will be challenging to find a replacement for him. He is still at the peak of his game at the age of 39 and is more or less consistently our best defender. However, he is unlikely to be a long-term option and will need replacing sooner rather than later.

While we have numbers to replace him, traits such as experience will only come with time. Hopefully, we can give Silva something to celebrate about come the end of the current season. After all, if he is to leave next summer, it might as well be on a high.
