“They were young”- Pochettino calls for patience as Chelsea discover their feet under new management

Mauricio Pochettino insists his young Chelsea side needs time to live up to their potential

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has insisted that his young side will take time to show their full potential despite the £1 billion invested by the owners to bring in new players over the last three transfer windows.

Chelsea’s recruitment drive has emphasised signing young talents around the globe since the arrival of Todd Boehly, but the results have so far been below par. The West Londoners have the youngest squad in the Premier League, with an average age of 23. These players have also been signed on long term-deals, hitching them to the club’s fate on the field.

Chelsea have broken the British transfer record twice when they signed Enzo Fernandez and later Moises Caicedo in the last two transfer windows. Fernandez has proven his value, but Caicedo hasn’t played enough games for us to generate an opinion yet.

Under Pochettino, Chelsea’s performance has seen massive steps despite just one win, and the manager is optimistic that his young side will eventually deliver, (h/t Daily Mail) as he said:

‘’They were once young also; John Terry was young, Frank Lampard was young, and Didier Drogba was young. You know better than me; that is a completely different pressure. This is a different Chelsea than what I saw when I was at Tottenham or Southampton. Worse or better? I’m not saying that.”

There is little doubt that the current Chelsea roster is brimming with potential. The onus is now on Pochettino to ensure that the players deliver on their promise and develop into superstars at Stamford Bridge. After all, there is only so much money Boehly can keep throwing at problems if matters on the pitch fail to improve.

It also took John Terry and Frank Lampard a few seasons to find their feet before they eventually became icons at Chelsea. Even if you win games, there is still a lot of pressure because fans expect you to keep the run going. However, if they maintain their calmness and back Pochettino, then good days will surely be around the corner for the Blues.
