Mauricio Pochettino believes that to control the momentum of the game, the entire squad should be fit, as an injury-hit Chelsea deal with a poor start to the new season.
Key players such as Reece James, Christopher Nkunku, and Rome Lavia have been dealt an injury blow, and their return remains uncertain. This has given Pochettino limited players to rely upon in key areas of the pitch.
Chelsea are set to face Bournemouth on Sunday evening. The Argentine manager will expect to end their losing streak after a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest before the international break.
However, injuries have also impacted the club’s performance as Nkunku’s absence has seen the Argentine manager use Ben Chilwell on the left wing, and the left-back wasn’t effective in his new role further upfield.
He stressed that he needs to have an entire squad fit to control the game as not many will have as much impact as other players, (h/t Football.London) as he told
“To control the game, you need your whole squad fit and involved if you want to control the game. You need the same quality, and the players that come off the bench need to make an impact. You need to have quality. If you have all the players fit for sure,.
“You can say about Jackson, but Jackson needs Sterling, and Sterling needs Jackson. Nkunku is injured, and Madueke was injured. They all have their own problems, and at the moment they are all so focused on trying to be fit.”
It’s agreeable to what Pochettino has said because having an entire squad is good for depth, given that it will give him options to shift and change as per the requirement. Fans were excited to see Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson play in the Premier League after witnessing their excellent link-up in pre-season, but injuries ruined their hopes.
But we have had control of the game in earlier contests, the outcome wasn’t in our favour. Surely, it will get easier when our best players are back available once again.
Currently, we have young players and Pochettino also doesn’t have enough experienced individuals who can impact the game as replacements. we cannot expect young stars to change the course of the match if they are introduced in the 80th minute. The former Southampton manager needs to start taking risks and give young players starts in the games, that’s how they will grow.
