John Terry has claimed that after leaving Chelsea, it was his dream to come back and manage the Blues, which hasn’t been the case for the centre-back.
The former centre-back recently agreed to become manager of Saudi Pro League club Al-Shabab FC. He will join the likes of Steven Gerrard, Slaven Bilic, Nuno Espirito Santo, and Jorge Jesus, who are already managing Saudi clubs.
The former Chelsea captain hopes to gain experience as a manager to return to Europe and try his hands at any of the clubs. He earlier wanted to return to Chelsea as manager.
Terry has mainly worked as assistant manager alongside Dean Smith at Leicester City, with a brief spell as coach and assistant manager at Aston Villa.
It will be his first time managing a club, and hopefully, the 42-year-old will have a dream to return to Chelsea as manager. Speaking to journalist Simon Philips, he said:
“I made a promise that I would come back. My dream when I left was to come back and manage Chelsea. I would die a happy man. I have to learn my trade. I’ve interviewed for other jobs but not gotten them. I need to do what I do at the Chelsea Academy and help them.”
If he succeeds in the Saudi League, he still has a chance to live out his aspirations. Given that Chelsea had four managers take over the club last season and none of them were successful, shows managing the club is not an easy task. Terry will undoubtedly need two or more years to obtain the necessary management expertise to oversee one of the largest teams in Europe.
He is undoubtedly the type of manager who can instill a winning attitude, which is why he was Chelsea’s captain. We sincerely hope he succeeds in his role as Al-Shabab’s manager and leads Chelsea once more, this time from the pitch side. But given Frank Lampard’s struggles, it is clear that the job will not be an easy one.
