Ian Maatsen rejected move to Burnley amid Chelsea’s approval of their £31.5m bid

Chelsea hoped to make a sizable profit after they accepted a £31.5 million bid from newly promoted club Burnley for Ian Maatsen, but the left-back turned down the offer.

According to the Evening Standard, (h/t Metro) on Friday Chelsea accepted a £31.5 million bid from Burnley for Ian Maatsen on loan with an obligation to buy.

However, the left-back spoke to former Manchester City defender and Burley head coach Vincent Kompany regarding his reticentness to join the club, which was later made permanent.

The youngster was previously on loan to Burnley in the 2022–23 season, who renewed their interest in signing him. However, the 21-year-old was willing to join West Ham United, who later cooled their interest after Aaron Cresswell was expected to stay.

The Blues now want the left-back to sign a new contract after he chose to remain at Stamford Bridge. The Blues will now have three options at left-back after Marc Cucurella’s move to Manchester United collapsed.

However, Maatsen has played out of position under Mauricio Pochettino and has featured in Chelsea’s last four games across all competitions.

Despite playing in a different position, Maatsen has performed admirably, and his continued presence at Chelsea gives us excellent depth after we sold Lewis Hall to Newcastle United, while Cucurella’s performance has been patchy. He will therefore be crucial to us this season, and the maturity of his play despite his young age provides us with a benefit.

But the £31.5 million bid was also respectable because it would have helped the club turn a nice profit. Once Christopher Nkunku returns, he might be shifted to his natural position, given that we have also signed Col. Palmer. So it makes little sense to play him in the forward line now.
