“I need to be more involved”- Mauricio Pochettino makes Chelsea transfers admission

Chelsea manager is keen on taking a bigger role in the upcoming January transfer window

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that he is taking greater responsibility for the club’s transfers and has already begun planning January additions, according to the Guardian.

The Blues have spent over £1 billion under new owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital who had appointed a recruitment board. But they want Pochettino more involved now, particularly in acquiring experienced players to balance their youth focus.

The Chelsea hierarchy want to sign a new striker to solve the team’s goalscoring troubles. And they are particularly interested in Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

Mauricio Pochettino commented on how he shares a good relationship with the owners and sporting directors.

“The good thing is the relationship and communication is very good with the sporting directors and owners, when the transfer window was closed I said I need to be more involved now in all the decisions. I have started to work to identify what we need for January.”

With Chelsea struggling for goals and in 14th place in the Premier League, signing a quality striker is of utmost importance. With Christopher Nkunku injured and Nicolas Jackson vastly underperforming, Chelsea’s form has been a complete mess.

For the next 3 months, however, Pochettino has to make use of what is available to him. Recovering Nkunku and making use of the fresh-out-of-injury Armando Broja are likely to be his current top priorities.

“Football is very dynamic and it is about the present always, things can change until January. We need to work to recover Nkunku and Armando Broja to try to provide the team with more goals and become solid. But, of course, we have already started to work [on transfers].”

With Chelsea missing key players like Reece James, Wesley Fofana, and Benoît Badiashile among others, getting transfers right is vital. Pochettino’s deeper involvement in recruitment and long-term planning will hopefully yield better results.

It is a huge surprise that the coach comes out and says this after all the money that the Blues have spent his summer. Looks like we will be in for another transfer window in January where we throw money around to see what sticks.

This could be Pochettino’s way of saying that he isn’t happy with the crop of players he has signed recently. Lesley Ugochukwu was for sure a club signing rather than made by the club. Wonder how many others arrived at Stamford Bridge in a similar fashion…

Roman Abramovich was clearly very involved in Chelsea’s transfer dealings but the managers who took charge of the club more or less got what they wanted as well. We have to ensure Poch has the final say right now… if not, why did we get him in?
