Mauricio Pochettino has promised Raheem Sterling he will help him earn national team call
Mauricio Pochettino has assured he will help Raheem Sterling get back into the national team before UEFA Euro 2024, after the player’s surprise omission against Scotland and Ukraine despite being a regular for the Three Lions in recent years.
Sterling has begun the new season in solid form, with two goals and an assist in his last four games. It was anticipated he would be called up for the September international break, but Gareth Southgate opted against picking the 28-year-old.
The Chelse head coach was shocked that, despite his convincing performance, the former Liverpool star couldn’t make the cut and has now promised the forward he will help him get into the national team.
Sterling was part of the England team last season that participated in the 2022 World Cup, and Pochettino hopes he once again features for the Three Lions in Euro 2024. Speaking to the media before the game against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, (h/t Mirror) he said:
“He is motivated to perform here and help Chelsea. And, like all top players, after that, he also wants to play for the national team. He is desperate to play for the national team.”
“We were talking the day after, and we said to him, We are going to help you earn your way back into the national team. You need to train, to keep going, to play well for your club, and for sure the coach is going to see, and you will have more possibility to join the national team.’’
The Three Lions currently have a golden generation, and based on his performance, Sterling merited being called up for the Euro qualifier against Ukraine (1-1) and the 3-1 friendly win against Scotland. Chelsea are a huge club and they will always have the spotlight on them.
So Sterling can rest assured his displays here won’t go unnoticed. The Blues suffered a huge setback with a 0-0 draw against Bournemouth in the Premier League earlier today, where Sterling was ineffective.

The English winger wasn’t effective last season but so far, under Poch, he has been one of our very best players, even if that hasn’t amounted to a lot of goals and assists. If he gets Chelsea out of this rut in the coming months, England will certainly come calling before the Euros in Germany.
