Gary Neville has called out Chelsea for their transfer signings and has labelled them mad and chaotic under Todd Boehly, following the 0-0 draw against Bournemouth.
A group led by US businessman Boehly became Chelsea’s owner after the culmination of the 2021/22 campaign; this saw the end of Abramovich’s 19-year tenure as the club’s owner. Chelsea, under Boehly, have gone through a squad revamp with new ambitions and the signing of mainly young players. In the last three transfer windows, Chelsea spent £1 billion.
Apart from the largely new squad, there has been a modification in management with Mauricio Pochettino the latest to take charge at Stamford Bridge. Under Pochettino, Chelsea’s start to the new season has already become poor, as the Blues have only one win in five Premier League games.
And Neville feels Chelsea needs to stop signing players as their acquisitions have turned mad and chaotic. (h/t Mirror), Speaking to Sky Sports, he said:
It’s mad, it’s chaotic—the amount of players they bring in—we have been saying it for 15 months. Cole Palmer being bought for £40 million from Manchester City is another one. We have seen it with United—that lack of stability at the top since Todd Boehly came in from Roman Abramovich. Every department at the club has changed, and it’s too much.”
Every owner views football differently, and our owners want to implement new club principles. Boehly wants to put more emphasis on young players who he feels will be the face of Chelsea in future. However, in the end, we all are judged on results and footballers are no different.
Although this stage of the process and our signings have looked promising, there is still much work to do. After all, it is of little use unless tangible progress is shown in the years to come. While the signing of young players is great news, Chelsea do need to counterbalance it with the infusion of the right senior stars to offer valuable experience and leadership.
Neville may be correct to a degree, but we have made better purchases overall than Manchester United. On occasion, however, we have gone crazy in our pursuit of players. The onus is now on Pochettino and his players to prove their detractors wrong.
