Chelsea opted against signing striker before landing rival attacking prospect

Chelsea considered signing a striker on deadline day but instead recruited Cole Palmer

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea considered acquiring a striker, but they instead went for Cole Palmer for £42.5 million before the summer deadline day last week.

It is also understood the Blues have taken Ivan Toney into consideration for the upcoming transfer window, and for now, they look to depend on Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja. Given our struggles upfront, it appears obvious that a new attacker is needed.

Jackson was in the spotlight in the game against Nottingham Forest after the striker missed a four-yard tap-in as Chelsea lost their second game of the season. Meanwhile, Broja is nearing a return and could be available for Chelsea’s next game against Bournemouth on September 17.

With the signing of Palmer, Pochettino will hope the youngster will be a catalyst for the club. The 20-year-old made his debut in Nottingham and displayed his brilliance. How effective Palmer has been since being signed was demonstrated by his through ball to Raheem Sterling, who set up Jackson for a missed opportunity.

However, the club games are set to pause for a week with an international break in between. Pochettino will hope to see how to address their goal-scoring woes. Hopefully our youngsters pick up their performances and turn a corner soon.

Palmer can definitely make a difference and is also clinical. Chelsea made a smart decision by signing him but asking him to shoulder the burden while being so young is too much. We saw against Nottingham that he can create opportunities. He strikes the ball hard and has good vision. Palmer is a good choice for the position since we need a player who can be creative and operate behind a striker.

This season, Jackson will play a significant role, and we are confident that he will make amends in the games that follow. For the players to function as a cohesive team, there must be greater mutual respect and trust. Broja is also getting halfway to full fitness, so Pochettino will have plenty of choices for the centre-forward position.
