Chelsea in pole position to sign Brazilian starlet after Barcelona exit

Chelsea get Barcelona boost in Gabriel Moscardo race this January

According to Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola, via Football.london, Chelsea are currently leading the race to sign highly-rated Brazilian teenager Gabriel Moscardo when the January transfer window opens.

The Blues attempted to secure the young starlet’s signature late in the summer window but ultimately could not finalize a deal. However, Chelsea would now have an added advantage if they plan to reignite their pursuit of the Brazilian phenom this winter.

Barcelona have been linked with making a move for the 19-year-old Moscardo. But according to Nicola, there is nothing concrete between the teenager and the Spanish giants at the moment.

“For now, there’s nothing concrete regarding Barcelona. Just speculation through the media”.

This update comes as good news for Chelsea, as it seems to leave the door open for them to make their push for Moscardo without worrying too much about Barca. The Catalan giants, otherwise, are always a lucrative destination for any young South American player.

Moscardo, born in Taubaté, Brazil, joined the youth academy of Brazilian club Corinthians in 2017. He made his first appearance with Corinthians’ senior team on 28 June this year.

He came on as a second-half substitute for Giuliano in a 3–0 home victory over Liverpool in this year’s Copa Libertadores.

Moscardo perfect for Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea?

With his blend of flair, technique, and defensive ability, fans view Moscardo as one of Brazil’s most promising young talents and a potential superstar in the making.

Moscardo could fit the profile that Mauricio Pochettino seems to want to build his new-look Chelsea around. The Blues are currently undergoing a period of drastic change, building the team around fresh blood. Our club has already signed 13 youngsters this year while letting go of experienced players like César Azpilicueta, N’Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Midfield is an area that saw a huge revamp. Moscardo is a defensive midfielder and he can be a good academy player right now, or someone we can loan to use later on. But right now, we have to focus first on what we have. Use Romeo Lavia before thinking about who to sign there next.

It will be senseless to spend money on other youngsters before we sort out the squad we already have.
