Chelsea lining up ambitious move for African goalscoring machine

Chelsea are eyeing an ambitious move for Napoli star Victor Osimhen

Chelsea are once again going to try their luck to sign Victor Osimhen as they dream of an ambitious move for the Napoli striker. The Blues had interest last summer transfer window but never submitted a bid for his services.

As per Il Mattino, (h/t Football.London) Chelsea hopes to add the Nigerian striker once they return to the UEFA Champions League. Osimhen currently has two years left on his Napoli contract and will not come cheap.

Last season, Chelsea labouring to score goals made it evident the club needed a prolific centre-forward. But the club ended up signing Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku, the latter sidelined for the foreseeable future with an injury.

The same scenario has persisted throughout this season, and Chelsea lack the edge in front of goal. While Nkunku is expected to be sidelined until November, Jackson is currently acquainting himself with the league.

Four games into this season, the club has just one Premier League win, that too, against newly promoted Luton Town. The Blues have also voiced their interest in signing Ivan Toney in the upcoming January transfer window. So if they are able to sign Toney, then going all in for Osimhen won’t make sense.

Having two strikers who would demand regular game time can cause chaos at the club, with Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja also in the ranks. Chelsea must be wise in deciding who they want and who they don’t.

Chelsea needs to be strategic about their signing targets because choosing Osimhen will give them a top player whose best years are still ahead of him. We could use either Jackson or Broja as backup strikers and can pick up a thing or two from the Nigerian.

Toney is not just the cheaper option to Osimhen but is also familiar with the Premier League style of football. Unlike Osimhen, Toney will need little time to make an impact, giving Chelsea a huge advantage from the get go.

This is undoubtedly a perplexing notion. The Blues should come up with stronger suggestions before choosing whether to sign Toney or the Nigerian forward. There are pros and cons in both cases and it remains to be seen which side the cookie crumbles.
