Tony Bloom, the owner of Brighton & Hove Albion, stated that Chelsea might not be doing any transfer transactions with them for the foreseeable future. He has also stated that he has no conflicts with Chelsea, despite the fact that the Blues frequently expresses interest in his staff.
The Blues signed Moises Caicedo and Robert Sanchez for around £135 million this summer, with talks over the former’s signing stretching for months before the club agreed to a fee. Ultimately, we had to fork out a British record fee to land the Ecuadorian star.
There have been many dealings between the clubs over the years as the likes of Marc Cucurella, Billy Gilmour, Levi Colwill (On loan), and former Chelsea boss Graham Potter among others have been traded.
Bloom has no problems indulging in the transfer window with West Londoners, but he feels they won’t be doing transfer business for some time, (h/t Evening Standard), as he told The Athletic (subscription needed):
“When Graham went, that was six of our staff all in one go, but we just look at it all individually, and every deal is a separate deal, and the fact it happens to be one club is the way it is.”
“It’s possible over the next two or three years that we have no dealings with Chelsea. So, for me, it’s not personal at all, and with each individual deal, I’ve got to do what’s best for the football club first and foremost.”
It makes sense what Bloom is conveying since he wants to get as much money out of Chelsea selling their best players, and if the shoes are to be reversed, Chelsea will do the same. However, when dealing with Brighton, we have occasionally overstepped our bounds, and paying £115 million to sign Caicedo seems outrageous. Holding negotiations with the Seagulls has always been difficult since they drag them out until their terms are met with little room for negotiations.
Perhaps he is correct that Chelsea won’t want to recruit any Brighton players for a while, but they still have elite players such as Evan Ferguson and Kaoru Mitoma. As long as they continue to impress, it will be difficult to not have Chelsea sniffing around.
