Chelsea target Elye Wahi now a subject of interest for West Ham United
According to Get French Football News (h/t the Sun) West Ham United have joined Chelsea in the race to sign Montpellier striker Elye Wahi in this transfer window.
Eintracht Frankfurt and Paris-Saint Germain are also interested in the young French striker. It is revealed that Montpellier are yet to receive an offer that is good enough for them to sell the player.
The report also states that although Frankfurt made a bid of around €33m, gazumping Chelsea’s €28m offer, it is still short of what the Ligue 1 side are demanding for the 20-year-old.
Wahi is a versatile forward who predominantly operates as a number nine. He has been in good form for Montpellier in the last two seasons, scoring 29 goals and assisting eight in 66 league appearances.
A few days ago, unfortunate news came out that Christopher Nkunku’s knee injury, which he picked up while playing a pre-season game against Borussia Dortmund in the USA, is serious enough to keep him out until December.
As a result, Chelsea now have only one option up front – Nicolas Jackson. Raheem Sterling can play as a nine, but he is better when cutting in from wide areas.
The thing with Nkunku is that he is flexible. Hence, Mauricio Pochettino could miss him not just in the number nine or ten position, but also in wide areas.
Hence, it would make no sense if Chelsea do not sign a new forward in this window. Wahi is a striker who can play in different positions across the forward line.

The 20-year-old, although young, has had a good time in the French top flight. So, why not make a better bid for him and see if Montpellier accept? Seeing him go to West Ham won’t be too pleasing for starters.
