“Doesn’t sprint back”- Roy Keane rips into Chelsea superstar for half-hearted effort vs Liverpool

Roy Keane criticizes Chelsea skipper Reece James for his lax defensive job against Liverpool

Roy Keane lambasted Chelsea star Reece James for not leading from the front in their 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Sunday. James, who has been named the new captain of the club was in the starting line-up and played as a wing-back at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool opened the deadlock through Luiz Diaz in the 18th minute but once Chelsea grew into the game they appeared more threatening and drew level thanks through Axel Disasi. Ben Chilwell had a goal ruled out denying us an important win.

The 23-year-old James did well but was replaced in the 76th minute, which appeared to indicate that the defender had picked up another injury. But Mauricio Pochettino clarified in the post-match press conference that he was just tired. Hopefully James will improve his match fitness and play a key role for us this season.

Overall, the right-back had a great game and certainly led the line, but it was his first official game since recovering from injury. There was enough promise shown by him and a James in full flow is a sight to behold.

However, James‘ performance did not please Manchester United legend Keane, who slammed the 23-year-old, (h/t Mirror), on Sky Sports, as he said:

“James doesn’t sprint back there. He can actually see him running, and he doesn’t track back. We’re always talking about systems, but James might say, ‘Well, I’m a wingback, and that’s not my job’, but you have to sprint back and not let him get through.”

“He might as well stop and have a cup of tea! Look at the space! James is the captain; he’s supposed to lead by example. Look at him thinking, ‘Will I? Won’t I?’ Start sprinting back, man.”

Keane’s displeasure is understandable because he is the kind of player who wants to remain focused throughout the game. Although he produced a respectable performance in his first game of the season, you cannot unfortunately always count on James to perform flawlessly.

He found openings, connected with his teammates, and could have been credited with an assist had Nicolas Jackson been more clinical. He was exhausted in the end, but as the season picks up speed, he will undoubtedly return to his best.

Putting the entire blame on him doesn’t seem wise and it was his first game as captain. Once the season gains momentum and James grows into the captain’s role, we will certainly see him shine through.
