“Haunt you”- Raheem Sterling outlines key issue that saw Chelsea struggle against West Ham

Raheem Sterling feels Chelsea lost to West Ham United due to lack of end product

Chelsea star Raheem Sterling feels the Stamford Bridge side lost to West Ham United recently due to their lack of end product in the final third.

The Blues visited the London Stadium on 20 August in the Premier League. David Moyes’ team broke the deadlock early on after a James Ward-Prowse whipped in a dangerous corner which was met by Nayef Aguerd.

However, Chelsea managed to get back into the game soon after with a sublime Carney Chukwuemeka goal. As a result, the Blues went into the break level and were starting to dominate the proceeding towards the end of the first-half.

Unfortunately, a lapse of concentration was our downfall as West Ham regained their lead early on in the second half. Michail Antonio fired a fearsome shot past Robert Sanchez.

Chelsea subsequently stepped it up and looked threatening throughout the fixture. In the 67th minute, Aguerd picked up a red card and we had the advantage on the pitch. But the Stamford Bridge side were unable to take their opportunities.

Speaking to Sky Sports (h/t Mirror) after the loss, Sterling credited West Ham’s clinicality for their victory. The England international feels Chelsea’s profligacy cost them.

“They took their chances and they deserve it in the end. Dominating a game at a ground like West Ham’s you have got to take your chances, this is the Premier League and it will come back to haunt you. When that second goal went in it was a downer, as we have not taken our chances and they took theirs.”

The former Manchester City star, 28, was one of our best players on the pitch. He looked threatening throughout and created a number of chances. However, the likes of Nicolas Jackson and Mykhaylo Mudryk were unable to make the most of them.

Enzo Fernandez also missed a penalty during the first half when the scores were level. Subsequently, in the final minutes of the match, debutant Moises Caicedo gave away a penalty which was slotted home by Lucas Paqueta.

Chelsea have evidently struggled with the lack of a prolific goalscorer for some time now. However, we have done nothing to address it this summer, either. Hopefully, the hierarchy will realise the issue and bolster the number nine position in the coming weeks.
