Paul Merson had a change of mind and has modified his Premier League prediction after witnessing Liverpool draw 1-1 draw against Chelsea. He claimed Chelsea would end the Premier League campaign on a better note and finish the season above Liverpool.
Earlier, he said Liverpool would conclude the season with Champions League qualification. But after seeing Chelsea’s performance against Liverpool and the Blues’ landing Moises Caicedo, he now feels Mauricio Pochettino will finish the season in the top four.
Besides signing Caicedo, Chelsea have also hijacked another Liverpool target, Romeo Lavia, who preferred to join the West Londoners over the Reds. The Belgian’s move to Stamford Bridge should be made official soon barring any late twists.
Now Merson feels Chelsea have a formidable squad, and finishing below the top four will be a disappointment for them after spending massive sums on signings, which we also agree with. (h/t Mirror), In his Sky Sports column, he said:
“Chelsea already look a hundred times better than last season, and with Moises Caicedo moving to Stamford Bridge, they’ll finish in the top four instead of Liverpool.”
“You could see in Sunday’s game that both clubs need Caicedo, and that’s why he’s going for £115 million. Is he worth that? Not for me, but Chelsea supporters won’t care how much they pay.”
What Merson said is completely reasonable. Despite playing poorly for the first 20 minutes of the game, we were the dominant team for the majority of the contest. Despite having a shaky midfield, we were still able to play respectable football and create plenty of opportunities that should have been executed.
Hopefully, these predictions come true as we are just one game into the season. A lot could change in the weeks to come and there is little to be gained by letting promising performances get to our head.
Now that Caicedo might be available for the upcoming matches, it will be more fascinating to see how Chelsea performs. Lavia is also on the verge of signing, and if that happens, we’ll have our ideal midfield of Enzo Fernandez, Caicedo, and Lavia. If we can finish in the top four in the Premier League, it would be a great stepping stone for Mauricio Pochettino to build a winning side.
