“Better players brings you closer”- Pochettino asserts Chelsea need a winning mentality following summer strengthening

Mauricio Pochettino urges Chelsea to be title contenders after massive transfer outlay

Argentine boss Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear that he wants Chelsea players to have a winning mentality after the club signed many top players in the summer window.

The Blues finalised the £58 million signing of Romeo Lavia after signing Moises Caicedo for £115 million. This takes Chelsea’s spending this week to £173 million, while their total summer outlay has reached £380 million.

Last season as well, the club recorded extravagant expenditure after finishing the season in 12th place, and Pochettino will be hoping the club can mount a fight for the Premier League title this season. It is the least we can ask for given our lavish outlay.

Speaking to the media before Chelsea’s game against West Ham United on Sunday, the Argentine manager sent a clear message, (h/t Mirror) and said:

“I said even before the signings that we need to expect to win; we need to expect to have a mentality that we will be there and everything is possible. Now with Moises and Romeo, of course, it’s not going to increase the percentage or the belief.

“I think we had the belief before, and now the team is going to have better tools and quality players, and, for sure, better players bring you closer to winning.”

Our midfield appears to be well structured now that Caicedo and Lavia are here, and we will be anticipating that they link up well with Enzo Fernandez in the middle of the park. With the centre of the pitch now secure, focus needs to be applied to the attacking roster with a prolific striker still to be brought in.

Pochettino still has a strong squad at his disposal and should be aiming higher than just a top four finish. Hopefully the players too take the manager’s words to heart and prove him to be a prophet.

Given that Chelsea have invested so much, the players must now treat every game as vital and strive to win them all. Failing to place in the top four will be viewed as an unsuccessful endeavour. We truly have a team that is capable of contending for the title and other trophies. Therefore, let’s hope we can end our game against the Hammers with a victory which will help build players’ confidence.
