Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Chelsea are working on the signing of their other targets as well but did not reveal the names of the players the Blues are currently looking at.
The last few days have been a rollercoaster for the Chelsea fans and the club. The tussle with Liverpool for both Moises Caicedo and later Romeo Lavia is one for the ages and one of the most enduring sags of the window.
Liverpool and Chelsea were in an intense battle to sign the Ecuadorian midfielder, and now the Blues seem to be leading the race to land the 21-year-old. The coming days should reveal where both players end up.
However, Pochettino has stressed that he would like another striker despite the Blues having Armando Broja and Nicolas Jackson. This after it was discovered that Christopher Nkunku is set to miss three and a half months due to a knee injury.
Now that the Premier League is also back, Chelsea will start their new season against Liverpool on Sunday, and speaking to the press before the game, the Argentine was asked about the Blues’ further signings, (h/t Chelsea), and he said:
‘‘It’s obvious where we have priorities because when you look at the squad and compare it to last season, too many midfielders have left the squad. We have different options, and we are working hard to try and see what we can do. We are working very hard but also being very respectful with all the names that are there and, of course, with the clubs that the players belong to. For us, it’s so important to be very respectful, and it’s the way I love to work, and it’s the way we need to work together here at the club.’’
Due to the events surrounding our pursuit of Moises Caicedo, we have been extremely busy over what has been a chaotic couple of days. Once we are hopefully able to secure him, we will have a respectable team with which to contend this year.
Our defence has adequate depth, and we have an understrength but decent offensive setup. Our major area of weakness is in the midfield both in terms of quality and strength in depth.
Hopefully, we get our priority deals over the line soo, giving Pochettino the tools needed to mount a resurgence. A trophy or two will go well in a campaign where we will be keen to get back into the top four spots.
