“I am happy with the midfield”- Pochettino says Chelsea need to strengthen “in all areas” this summer

Mauricio Pochettino believes there are certain areas Chelsea need to strengthen

Following their 1-1 tie with Borussia Dortmund in their final preseason match, Mauricio Pochettino emphasised that Chelsea needed improvement in certain areas ahead of the new season.

Chelsea have recouped £250m following the sale of plenty of their top players and are still striving to reduce their bloated squad, as Pochettino wants to trim down their roster further and add more experience to the team.

The club will now prepare for their opening game of the 2023–24 season against Liverpool, but Pochettino still has some positions that the Blues need to address.

One main position Chelsea are aiming to reinforce is their defensive midfield. After the departure of N’Golo Kante, the Blues are without a holding midfielder, and they are currently pursuing Moises Caicedo.

Their recent bid was rejected by Brighton & Hove Albion, as the Seagulls are demanding £100 million for the Ecuadorian midfielder. But Pochettino feels the club should fill up other areas on the pitch as well. When asked about upgrading their midfield (h/t Metro), Pochettino stated:

‘’No, I told you that we need to improve in all areas. I am happy with the midfield, but we also need to improve this area.’’

Right now, the team looks decent on paper, but a proper defensive midfielder is what we are lacking, and Caicedo should remain our priority signing. In the meantime, we have a quality striker in Nicolas Jackson, alongside Armando Broja and Christopher Nkunku. Together, these three can do a lot of damage.

However, it makes sense if Chelsea believe they need another striker.Broja isn’t world-class just yet while Nkunku can be deployed in a position behind the centre-forward.

With Levi Colwill’s contract extension and the addition of Wesley Fofana’s replacement (Axel Disasi) for the upcoming season, our defence also appears to be resolute. The only area that appears slightly debilitated is the defensive midfield, and if we can improve it, we will have an exciting squad for the upcoming season.
