Serie A club rekindle their interest in 24-year-old Chelsea defensive star

Inter Milan have rekindled their interest in Chelsea star Trevoh Chalobah

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Serie A giants Inter Milan are back in the race to sign Chelsea star Trevoh Chalobah after softening their pursuit for the centre-back earlier in the month.

The Blues are also open to letting the defender leave as he has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge. The Blues currently have Thiago Silva, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill, and now Axel Disasi on their centre-back roster.

It was also reported that the Serie A club valued the 24-year-old at around £25 million but never made an offer. However, now they once again look to sign him, while Chalobah wants to fight for his place in west London after impressing in pre-season.

But it is also understood that if a transfer offer comes in and if that pleases both parties, then the 24-year-old will depart for good. The centre-back had intermittent playing time under Graham Potter and Thomas Tuchel last season, but Frank Lampard gave him a few minutes on the field.

He could now serve as a backup defender under Pochettino, given that he should be playing consistently to develop into an experienced centre-back. Securing regular playing time elsewhere over scraps at Chelsea is the best bet for his development.

He will have a tremendous opportunity at Inter to play regularly and establish himself as the backbone of the team, much like Fikayo Tomori did at AC Milan. Chalobah is a Cobham product but it is time we accept that there are better players at our disposal than the 24-year-old.

When Chalobah was injured, Chelsea should have chosen him instead of buying a new defender, which clearly indicates that the team may not have faith in him. He may get some playing time, but it will be little, so it makes more sense to choose a move to a Serie A side.

Let’s hope this time Inter doesn’t abandon the race and come with an offer. A lucrative move to Serie A would suit all parties involved in the transfer.
