Fabrizio Romano confirms that Chelsea are looking at two alternatives for Moises Caicedo

Fabrizio Romano reveals Chelsea will consider signing Mohammed Kudus and Michael Olise if the Moises Caicedo deal stalls

According to Fabrizio Romano, (h/t Express), Chelsea will make a move for Mohammed Kudus and Michael Olise if the deal for Moises Caicedo from Brighton & Hove Albion doesn’t go through this summer transfer window.

Chelsea have been in negotiations with the Seagulls for months, but there has been no positive outcome so far as the Blues’ recent bid of  £80 million was rejected by Brighton. With time running out, the lack of progress is worrying.

The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino has seen a revamp of our squad, as the Blues have sold plenty of players to cut down their bloated squad. But it matters little if we fail to bring in adequate reinforcements.

However, the Blues are looking for replacements, and their most important position that needs additions remains defensive midfielder, which is yet to be filled after the departure of N’Golo Kante and Matero Kovacic. Caicedo has been seen as the ideal player who can fill the vacuum, but they have yet to reach an agreement with the Seagulls, which is prolonging our preparations for the new season.

Romano has confirmed that Chelsea will see Kudus and Olise as alternatives to the Caicedo deal, but both operate in different roles and are not similar to Caicedo in terms of positions or style. Surely that would indicate that Pochettino is keen to try out different tactics.

While Caicedo is a holding midfielder, Kudus and Olise are versatile players who can play on the right flank as well as attacking midfielders. The Blues should emphasise signing Caicedo right now because, if they don’t, we won’t have a defensive midfielder, and we will have to use Andrey Santos. Our midfield appeared fragile last season as a result of Kante’s injury, and we were absolutely outperformed by opposition midfielders.

We can’t make the same mistake twice because if we don’t give Pochettino the resources he needs to win games, eventually the manager and owners will be held accountable once more. Therefore, we must exercise caution and expect to finalise the acquisition of Caicedo before our opening match against Liverpool on August 13.
