A View From The Bridge

South American sensation “can’t wait” to make his debut after completing Chelsea switch

Deivid Washington has signed a seven-year contract with Chelsea after signing a £17.2m deal

Deivid Washington is happy to join Chelsea and “can’t wait” to make his debut for the club after signing a £17.2m deal from Brazilian side Santos.

The 18-year-old has signed a seven-year contract with the Blues with an option for an extra year. He is an exciting young player with the potential to become one of the best in the future.

Chelsea signed Nicolas Jackson earlier in the window from Villarreal and the Senegal international has started the first two games of the season in the centre-forward position.

It remains to be seen what sort of Mauricio Pochettino and the club have for Washington going forward. Here’s what the latter upon his move to Chelsea (h/t BBC):

“I’m very happy to be joining a huge team like Chelsea.

“I can’t wait to make my debut here at such a big club, and provide lots of goals and assists.”

Washington is a versatile forward who can play both as a striker and a left winger. After starting his youth career at Gremio, he moved to Santos in 2016. He made his senior debut there in this calendar year.

With Christopher Nkunku out till December and Romelu Lukaku’s future is unlikely to be at Stamford Bridge beyond this transfer window, there might be a case for Pochettino to keep Washington in the squad as a backup to Jackson.

While it may not be an ideal solution given the 18-year-old has hardly played much top-flight football, and none of that in Europe, Chelsea are short in the centre-forward department.

Deivid Washington can’t wait to make his Chelsea debut after signing from Santos.

So, unless a club can sanction a move for an experienced striker, the dependence would be on Jackson to lead the line and score the necessary goals in the coming weeks and months.

To be fair to him, the Senegalese international has played well in the first two games without scoring goals. There is a consensus that goals will flow for him once that first one goes in.
