Chelsea activate the release clause to sign Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams pending the completion of medical tests
As per an exclusive in The Telegraph (subscription required), Chelsea have activated the release clause to sign Leeds United and USA midfielder Tyler Adams as soon as possible.
It was confirmed a couple of days ago that Adams has a release clause of £20m in his contract with Leeds. He signed for the Yorkshire-based club last summer itself but the club got relegated to the Championship at the end of last season.
Once the medical tests are done and everything is fine, we could see the 24-year-old signing a contract. With Chelsea’s first game of the season against Liverpool not until Sunday afternoon, there might be a case for him to at least be in the playing squad for that.
Adams was one of the standout players for Leeds despite their relegation campaign. He had an excellent season with the USA men’s team in Qatar as well. We remember how well he did against England in a group-stage match.
The former RB Leipzig player can play in a double midfield pivot, as a lone defensive midfielder and as a right-back. He is a high-intensity player who likes to get stuck in tackles and duels and work hard for the team on or off the ball.
Although signing him should not be the end of Chelsea’s midfield search for this summer, it certainly would be a relief that the club has managed to agree a deal for a player who could become a key part of the cog under Mauricio Pochettino.
