Chelsea star Christopher Nkunku is likely to miss the season opener against Liverpool due to a knee injury
According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea star Christopher Nkunku is most likely to miss Chelsea’s opening league game of the season against Liverpool due to a knee injury.
Nkunku picked up a knock during Chelsea’s final pre-season game in the USA against Borussia Dortmund. The hard playing surface in Chicago played its part.
The relief is that the Frenchman is not out for several months due to this setback. However, it is enough to at least keep him out of the season opener against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, August 13.
It should come as a blow because the former Leipzig forward looked in decent touch in the pre-season games. He scored three goals in five games before the Dortmund clash.
Nkunku was either starting on the left wing or as a number 10 by Mauricio Pochettino. Those are the two positions he plays his best football at.
With the 25-year-old out against Liverpool, we might see Mykhaylo Mudryk or Raheem Sterling playing on the left and one of Carney Chukwuemeka or Conor Gallagher operating as a 10 behind the striker.
Let’s hope that Nkunku is back fit soon. His presence in the team is important if they are to do well in the league and try to finish in the top four. The Frenchman can not only create chances and cause havoc to the opposition’s defence, but he also can score goals at a good rate. He offers the threat from all parts of his game.
