“Liverpool won after many years working hard”- Pochettino cites rivals’ examples to make Chelsea point

Mauricio Pochettino wants to win now and create stability for the future simultaneously at Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino believes something special is being built at Chelsea and wants to win in the presence while creating stability for sustainable success in the future.

Since the change of ownership before the start of the last season, things have not been good for the Blues on the field. Some of the transfer activities have been weird as well.

The new owners sacked Thomas Tuchel very early last season and handed the job to Graham Potter. After a sustained period of mediocrity, the latter was relieved of his duties before Frank Lampard got the interim job till the end of the campaign.

Pochettino has taken over the reins since the start of this summer and things have looked good in pre-season so far. Here’s what the Argentine said when asked about managing expectations at the club and creating stability (h/t Evening Standard):

“You cannot win if you do not build. You can bring in names and players… there are some exceptions but in general all the clubs who win in the end… Liverpool won after many years working hard and being consistent, [Manchester] City the same after seven or eight years with Pep and Real Madrid also.

“It is a process that needs time, but in football you can’t ask for time. We know we need to deliver now. My message to everyone here is: ‘We are at Chelsea and we need to win. Today, not tomorrow’.”

Pochettino is hitting the right tone in press conferences. Although things are not won or lost in the press room, it definitely gives us an indication of how the manager is feeling ahead of the start of the season.

Chelsea finished 12th last season and scored only 38 goals in the league. With no European football distraction, Pochettino will have added time between the league games to get more training under the belt and make the players ready to climb up the ladder in the division.

The Blues cannot afford to have another year of underwhelming performances. The minimum target should be to finish in the top four. Whether they can achieve that will depend a lot on how the manager uses his resources in the next nine months.

With more than 20 days still to go in the transfer window, the club must find a way to sign a central midfielder. Moises Caicedo has been the top target but Brighton are stubborn with their asking price. There are links with Leandro Paredes. Pochettino wants to add experience to that department. Let’s hope a signing is made in that position before the first game against Liverpool.
