Chelsea are closing in on the signature of Romeo Lavia despite Liverpool interest
As per a tweet from Jacob Steinberg of the Guardian, Chelsea are close to agreeing on a £55m deal to sign Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia in the coming days.
Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports concurrently revealed that the Blues have agreed personal terms with the 19-year-old. So, once the deal between the clubs is done, Lavia will become a Chelsea player.
Liverpool have had three bids rejected by Southampton for the Belgian international. The maximum they went was £46m. Chelsea tried £48m a couple of nights ago but it got rebuked. It feels like the £55m offer won’t be turned down.
The best part about that tweet from Steinberg is that Chelsea are still working out a way to sign Moises Caicedo despite Liverpool’s agreement with Brighton 24 hours ago.
There was an indication that the Blues have retracted from signing Tyler Adams to raise the funds for the Caicedo deal. Now, it feels as if they did not get the USA international to free up spaces for two additions. It is actually insane!
It goes without saying that Chelsea needed a couple of additions in the central midfield department. If both Caicedo and Lavia come, we won’t be surprised if Conor Gallagher is offloaded to balance the books to some extent.
The agreement with the latter means Liverpool could be in a no-mans land situation once the former is signed by the Blues. What a day that could be for the club. They can basically weaken a rival club in the league by cracking a deal for two top defensive midfielders.
