25-year-old star travelling to London for medical to seal Chelsea transfer

Axel Disasi is travelling to London to complete his medical and the move to Chelsea from Monaco

As per a tweet from CFCPys, via transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, French defender Axel Disasi is flying to get his medical completed ahead of the move to Chelsea.

The Athletic (subscription required) revealed that the Blues had agreed a deal with Ligue 1 side AS Monaco to sign the defender. The move would cost the club something in the region of £38m.

We know that Arsenal and Manchester United were also in the race to sign the 25-year-old. So, it is a massive coup for Chelsea to beat league rivals for a promising and versatile defender.

Disasi is a centre-back who can operate as a right-back when required. Chelsea have lost a player of similar profile due to an ACL injury – Wesley Fofana. We can expect the latter to miss the majority of the coming season due to that setback.

Blues have Trevoh Chalobah in the squad who can play in similar positions but the Englishman is close to leaving the club after the upcoming arrival of Disasi. He was a subject of interest for Italian giants Inter Milan earlier in the window.

Disasi is a physically strong player who is good in aerial duels, defensive reading of the game and passing range from the back. He could be a great addition to the squad in the coming years.

With Thiago Silva and Levi Colwill fit and ready ahead of the start of the season, it remains to be seen how Mauricio Pochettino lines up his defence for the first game of the season. Benoit Badiashile will return from his hamstring injury soon as well.

There is an understanding that Silva is 38 now and may not play every game. So, we could see a long-term centre-back partnership between Colwill and Disasi going forward.
