A View From The Bridge

“My dream”- Chelsea sensation excited to make loan switch to Premier League rival

Andrey Santos can’t wait to get going at Nottingham Forest following his loan move from Chelsea

Young Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, who has joined Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan deal, is “happy and excited” to be at the City Ground and cannot wait to get started.

Blues signed the Brazilian youth international from Vasco Da Gama for a deal worth around £18m in the January transfer window. He was initially denied a work permit before getting it before the summer began.

As a result, the 19-year-old did not make a senior appearance for Chelsea in the second half of last season. He has left the club now as there is a sense of fierce competition in midfield after the arrival of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia. Another young midfielder Cesare Casadei left on loan a few days ago. The Italian is currently playing for the Championship side Leicester City.

Coming back to Andrey, here’s what he said upon signing for Forest (quoted by Evening Standard):

“I am very happy and excited to be here. I know that Forest is a big club, they play good football and they have good players, which is important for me.

“It has always been my dream to play in the Premier League and I can’t wait to enjoy playing.”

The young Brazilian is a versatile midfielder who can play as a number eight, as a playmaker or in a double pivot if need be. He is rather comfortable operating in the box-to-box role.

Since Forest are in the Premier League, Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino would have a fair idea of how the player is doing in a league the same as the one they are competing in.

If the 19-year-old has a good year in Nottingham, he could force his way into the reckoning at Stamford Bridge. Either way, the learnings garnered in the next 10 months would be valuable for him.

Chelsea have a lot of players of this type either in the squad or loaned out. It would be interesting to see how Pochettino handles these youngsters who go on loan in view to impress the manager of their parent club.
