A View From The Bridge

20-year-old set for Real Sociedad transfer after Chelsea exit

Real Sociedad are set to sign Bryan Fiabema after the striker parted ways with Chelsea

As per a tweet from transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, young striker Bryan Fiabema is set to join Spanish side Real Sociedad after parting ways with the Chelsea Academy.

Fiabema arrived at the Chelsea Academy from Norwegian club Tromso IL in January 2020. He has had loan spells at Rosenberg and Forest Green, none of them lasting more than a few months.

During his time at Cobham, the 20-year-old scored 16 goals in 50 appearances for the various Chelsea youth sides. He is also a Norway U21 international now. Breaking into the senior national team would be tough when Erling Haaland is there.

It is brave of Fiabema to leave the Chelsea Academy in search of a club where he can potentially play for the first team regularly. He did not get that sniff here.

With regard to his attributes, the young Norwegian has good pace to trouble the opposition back line with runs in behind. He is good at dribbling in tight spaces and has a good shot in him. He has played as a winger on either as well to showcase his versatility as a forward.

In short, the 20-year-old has the talent and flexibility to make it on the big stage sooner or later. Let’s hope he develops his game at Sociedad and starts playing for their senior team. Once the experience of the top level is gained, it automatically raises the player’s level to the required standard.

Chelsea have done a lot of selling and letting go of players in this transfer window so far. It seems like Mauricio Pochettino does not want an expanded pool, both in the senior and junior level squad. Letting go of Fiabema shows that the club are happy about their options in the youth side at the moment.

That being said, there is no predicting with absolute certainty which players will go on to become world-beaters. But from the looks of it, it didn’t seem like Fiabema, at the age of 20, was pushing to play even a remotely relevant role for the Blues’ senior team.
