English star opens up on ‘honour’ of captaining Chelsea in Wrexham win

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah proud to don the armband after a transfer U-turn from the club

Trevoh Chalobah reveals that it was an “honour” to don the captaincy armband in a pre-season game for Chelsea as the club perform a U-turn regarding his transfer.

Chalobah was the captain of the Blues side for a part of the pre-season game against Wrexham AFC. They won the game 5-0 in what turned out to be a perfect workout for most of the players in the squad.

The defender, who was one of the players on the sale list for Chelsea this summer, was a subject of interest from Inter Milan. But, the club is now reluctant to sell him following a serious injury to Wesley Fofana. Benoit Badiashile is already out injured and still working on his recovery.

Here’s what Chalobah said about wearing the armband (h/t Evening Standard):

“Obviously it’s an honour to captain this club, it’s a great experience for me. Obviously it happened today and I’ll try not to think too much about it but obviously playing with a young squad out there I tried the younger players and we got the win so that’s good.”

Mauricio Pochettino is yet to appoint a full-time captain of this team after the departure of Cesar Azpilicueta a few days ago. In a squad filled with young players, it would be interesting where the manager goes in search of his leader on the field.

Coming back to Chalobah, knowing that he can play in multiple positions, he could be a valuable part of the squad next season. Apart from central defence, the 24-year-old has played as a right-back and a defensive midfielder before.

So, not just because of the injuries, but his versatility could be one of the reasons why Chelsea are reluctant to sell him this summer. Moreover, the Englishman has experience of playing for the club at the senior level and knows what to do to keep his place in the starting XI.

A good pre-season might do wonders for Chalobah’s chances of featuring regularly in his preferred position next season. Fofana’s injury could be a situation which he can make most out of on a personal level.
