Tottenham join Liverpool in the race to potentially sign Chelsea defender Levi Colwill
As per Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur have joined Liverpool and other suitors in the race to potentially sign Chelsea defender Levi Colwill this summer.
Tottenham are in talks to sign Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven, a player of a similar profile to Colwill. But, they have kept the latter on the shortlist.
Chelsea are insistent that the England U21 international is not for sale in this window. They even offered a new deal which hasn’t been signed by the player yet.
It is revealed that the 20-year-old will first have talks with Mauricio Pochettino before deciding on what to do with his future at Stamford Bridge.
Colwill had an exceptional loan season at Brighton and Hove Albion last time around. He was a part of the England U21 defence that did not concede a single goal on their way to lifting the U21 Euros last weekend.
The Chelsea defender is a left-footed player who is elegant on the ball, reads the game well, is aerially and physically strong and can operate in multiple positions across the back line.
If we look at this situation from the player’s viewpoint, he sees Pochettino having Benoit Badiashile, a player almost the same in profile as him, as an option to play regularly. With no European football for the Blues next season, there might be a case when the manager does not rotate his playing XI a lot.
That could mean a lack of playing minutes for Colwill. Hence, it makes sense why he is delaying the signature of the new contracts and wants to have conversations first.

Chelsea, on the other hand, should offer him the necessary assurances and make him sign that thing. Selling another one of their bright young players to a direct rival in the league won’t make sense especially given how much our backline has been weakened in the past year or so.
