A View From The Bridge

“I’d like it”- Thiago Silva says he has asked Serie A star about potential Chelsea transfer

Thiago Silva likes the idea of Paulo Dybala potentially joining Chelsea

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva is excited by the idea that Argentina and AS Roma star Paulo Dybala could join Chelsea in this transfer window.

A few days ago, it was revealed in Metro that Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino wants to sign fellow countryman Dybala from Roma. The 29-year-old’s contract with the Italian side runs until the summer of 2025 (Transfermarkt).

After that rumour, it was reported in Football London that the Argentina international will snub interest from Premier League clubs, including Chelsea to sign a new deal with Roma.

But, it seems like there is more to come in this story than we anticipated. The quote from Silva below is one of the depictions of that. Here’s what the Chelsea defender said (h/t Sky, via Evening Standard):

“I’ve asked Paulo Dybala if it’s true that he’s coming to Chelsea but he didn’t answer! He’s a top player, he’d be a massive signing for us — I’d like it.”

Dybala joined Roma last summer from fellow Serie A side Juventus. In his first season at the Stadio Olimpico, the 29-year-old scored 18 goals and assisted eight in 38 appearances in all competitions.

Although he can be inconsistent at times, the Argentine is one of the best players in Europe when it comes to having technical quality married with nimble feet to whiz past defenders in the final third.

He can operate as a number 10 in between the lines or a support striker behind a number nine who can link the play up very well with him and the wingers.

So, there is nothing in Silva backing the idea that Chelsea may sign Dybala this summer. Whether that happens or not, it remains to be seen. We are still in early July and a lot can happen in the transfer window.

Can Pochettino convince the player to come and play at Stamford Bridge? We might think so. The one thing to note is that the player is 29. Signing him would be in contrast to how the club has operated since last summer, which is to focus on buying players of 25 and under predominantly.
