Newcastle United want a loan move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher
According to the Telegraph (subscription required), Newcastle United want to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher on loan in this summer window.
The Magpies have also kept Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips on the list of midfielders they could sign on loan in the coming days. This is after they reached a stalemate with negotiations to sign Southampton’s Tino Livramento.
Newcastle have been interested in Gallagher for some time now. Back in May, Daily Mail reported that they are looking to complete a deal to sign the Englishman.
Back to the Telegraph report, it is revealed that new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino wants to keep the player and give him a set of opportunities next season.
The 23-year-old had an exceptional loan spell at Crystal Palace in the 2021/22 season but failed to convert that form in a Chelsea shirt last season. All of that cannot be attributed to him because the Blues were bad all around in the last 12 months.
With a fresh start under the new manager in store, there is a chance for Gallagher to prove that his good year at Palace wasn’t a fluke. When at his best, the England international can be a great asset to the squad.
He is a midfielder with an eye for goals and assists. He can also work hard for the team off the ball and play in different positions across the midfield. With Mason Mount now gone, having Gallagher might help Pochettino build a midfield around his energy.

Coming back to the Newcastle interest, it would make no sense to send the 23-year-old on loan to a direct rival in the league. If the Magpies had offered a good transfer fee, then things could have been different.
