A View From The Bridge

“I know how to handle it”- Chelsea target opens up on his future at PL club

Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo remains calm about his future while addressing Chelsea rumours

Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo is flattered by rumours linking him to Chelsea but he is leaving everything for God to decide.

Caicedo is Chelsea’s top midfield target for this summer window. A couple of days ago, it was revealed that Brighton want £100m if they are to sell the Ecuador international.

The Guardian then reported that the Blues won’t be meeting those demands and hope to get him at £80m. The Seagulls believe the bar is set by Arsenal paying £105m to sign Declan Rice. Actually, six months ago, Chelsea spent £106.8m to get Enzo Fernandez from Benfica. The bar was high even before this summer window started then.

Here’s what Caicedo said when asked about his future amidst Chelsea links (speaking to Ecuadorian journalist Maria Jose Flores, h/t Evening Standard):

“It’s a very great emotion. What guy wouldn’t want them to be talking about him? I know how to handle it. I don’t get carried away by emotions. I’m enjoying time with my family for now. There is pressure, but I am calm.

“I am waiting for whatever God decides. He willl know what is best for me.”

The 21-year-old had an exceptional season last time around. He was excellent in midfield and did well when asked to play at right-back for the last few games. He kept high-profile wingers quiet while doing the latter when Brighton won at Arsenal away from home and beat Manchester United at home.

With Chelsea losing Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante this summer, there is a gaping hole in the centre of the park. Enzo Fernandez is there but the Argentine needs a partner. Conor Gallagher isn’t the best when asked to play the deeper midfield role.

Squad shape-wise, it is all set up for the club to sign Caicedo and slot the Ecuadorian beside Fernandez in a two-man midfield pivot. That would set the base for the team. Those two can play passes, cover a lot of ground off the ball and be combative in ground duels.

Let’s hope this deal is done sooner rather than later. It could make or break the game for Chelsea in this transfer window. The earlier we sort this out, the more time we will have this summer to either map out alternatives or strengthen other positions.
