“As soon as possible”- Pochettino calls for Chelsea to make summer deals as season draws near

Mauricio Pochettino gives a mixed response on incoming Chelsea transfers

New Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has urged the club to make more signings this summer but went on to add that he would be happy with the same squad if further reinforcements do not come in anytime soon.

The Blues are still in the market for new signings despite landing plenty of youngsters who showed their credentials in the 5-0 win over Wrexham in the USA. Having lost a plethora of senior stars, we surely cannot go into the new season without significant reinvestment.

More so, several youth players could still be loaned out should the club deem it so. Doing so will further reduce the options on Pochettino’s books.

The Blues need to reinforce their midfield roster and are currently pursuing Moises Caicedo, who is keen to join the club. However, the process has been taking too long as Brighton & Hove Albion are demanding £100 million, which has proved Challenging for the Blues to pay so far.

This has frustrated the Argentine manager, who opened up about it in the media but later gave a mixed response after the Wrexham game, (h/t Express). Here is what Pochettino said:

“What do you think? As soon as possible, of course. Any coach would want to close out the squad as soon as possible. If it’s not possible, no problem. I am happy with how we are working.”

We have too many young players right now and it is debatable if all of them have the temperament to compete at the intensity level of the Premier League. These preseason games could determine whether they stay with the team or not. Whether standing still is the best step while teams around us continue to strengthen is debatable. While Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson are good signings, we definitely need more.

With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gone and Romelu Lukaku likely to follow suit, another striker should be coming in. How we have failed to address it so far is mystifying. While there is still time left before the summer transfer window slams shut, Chelsea’s lack of decisive moves is concerning.
