Chelsea’s pursuit of Harry Kane might come to an end as the England skipper is close to joining German club Bayern Munich from Tottenham Hotspur. He has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge this summer (h/t Football.London).
According to the Daily Mail, (h/t Sun), Bayern Munich representatives are holding talks with Tottenham face-to-face to finalise the deal, which could see Kane’s perpetual Spurs career come to an end.
It is also understood that the Bundesliga winners are confident that they can complete the deal for around £90 million. The Spurs striker, who recently turned 30, has not won a major trophy with his club and has entered the last year of his contract with no intention of renewing it.
Chelsea are among the clubs keen on signing the striker, but Kane has no intention to join the Stamford Bridge outfit to agitate North Londoners. Bayern are now currently leading the race, as they know Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy wouldn’t want to lose their valuable asset for nothing.
The 30-year-old has already agreed personal terms to join the former Chelsea boss’s side, but it will be known what position Bayern are in once the meeting takes place.
In recent years, Chelsea have struggled to locate a clinical striker as their previous signing of a centre-forward flopped at Bridge, and now the Blues’ hopes of landing the England skipper are faltering. It was a tough ask to begin with, given Spurs and Chelsea are arch-rivals and Daniel Levy is a hard negotiator to deal with..
Nicolas Jackson has been electric in pre-season but the fact of the matter is that the former Villarreal striker could use some time before being a regular starter here. A player like Kane would have guaranteed goals right now and for the next several years without fuss.
Bayern knew they need a new striker when their star striker, Robert Lewandowski, left the club to join Barcelona. Kane joining the Bavarians will be a top signing for them given how sumptuous the 30-year-old is in front of goal.
But hopefully, it shows Chelsea how other teams that we would deem to be at our level are strengthening their frontline with proven names. Trusting in youth is well and good. But at this level, and with the competition around us, fans would be much more relaxed if we bring in a proven goal-getter for the present and not just the future.
