“Intense week”- 22-year-old opens up on ‘stressful’ Chelsea negotiations in January

Enzo Fernandez reveals that his transfer to Chelsea was very stressful for him

Enzo Fernandez talked about his move to West London and claimed that during the transfer he was stressed and it affected him psychologically, but joining Chelsea was worth it.

Chelsea broke the British transfer record to sign the 2022 World Cup winner for £107 million on deadline day. The Blues were locked in negotiations with Benfica for a protracted period of time but managed to sign him in the winter transfer window.

Fernandez did have an immediate impact on the field, as he registered two assists in the 2022–23 season, which saw Chelsea finish 12th in the Premier League table.

Next season, the Argentine midfielder will be hoping to make a significant impact under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, who will commence his new era starting against Liverpool on 13th August in the Premier League.

But Fernandez has revealed how stressed out he was when Chelsea were in talks with Benfica over his signing, (h/t Daily Mail) as he quited by B/R Football:

”It was a very intense week. The negotiations were very long, and there were a lot of obstacles. Benfica didn’t want me to leave, and I have to say it was a very stressful week that took a lot out of me psychologically. But it all turned out the way you would want, and I was able to make that jump to play in the Premier League for a huge club like Chelsea.”

Chelsea fans can relate. We were desperate to see him in SW6 the moment the first links surfaced. Fans would be over the moon that we were able to recruit him before any other club hijacked our deal.

He is clearly one of the finest midfielders around and has a very bright future ahead of him. But he needs quality besides him like he does with the Argentine national team to fully unlock his potential.

He didn’t have enough support from his fellow players in the middle of the pitch last season, so hopefully, Chelsea sign an exceptional midfielder to pair with the 22-year-old and help our midfield regain its dominant status. Moises Caicedo would do the trick for sure.
