Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg linked with a move for Ligue 1 striker

Strasbourg will try to sign Montpellier striker Elye Wahi after Chelsea takeover

As per French outlet Foot Mercato (h/t Mirror), Strasbourg, the sister club of Chelsea, will attempt to sign Montpellier striker Elye Wahi amidst interest from the Blues.

A few days ago, it was revealed in Evening Standard that Chelsea have made contact with Wahi and Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic as their search for a number nine continues.

The recent report states that French club Strasbourg, which was taken over by the Blues owners, have an interest in signing the former Caen forward.

Wahi has been with Montpellier since September 2018. Last season, he scored 19 goals and assisted six in 33 Ligue 1 appearances. Those are excellent numbers for a striker in a team that finished 12th in the division.

The 20-year-old is a versatile young forward who can play as a nine and a winger on either side. He is still learning the craft and doing a pretty good job of it so far. A move to Stamford Bridge could be the pedestal he needs to further enhance his reputation.

Although we do not have any detail on that, it won’t be surprising if Chelsea let their sister club Strasbourg sign Wahi and see where the player is at in a couple of years’ time in terms of development.

The Blues have signed Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal to go some way in solving the number nine issue. They should focus on getting an experienced striker over the line in the coming days and put Jackson in the backup role since he is still young and has had only one season as a senior player.

What are the options though? The current market won’t allow the club to sign a striker on a cut-price deal unless a release clause is there in his contract.

Let’s hope Mauricio Pochettino and his staff have a couple of them on the shortlist. Wahi is a brilliant name but it seems to be a long-term kind of thing. What happens in the present is what should be our main concern after a horrific season.
