Chelsea lead London rivals Arsenal in the race to sign Ajax forward Mohammed Kudus
According to a report in the Independent, Chelsea lead Arsenal in the transfer race to sign Ajax and Ghana forward Mohammed Kudus this summer.
It is revealed that so far the Blues have offered a better or more convincing package than Arsenal. There is a feeling that the Gunners would be priced out of this deal.
A couple of days ago, the Times (subscription required) revealed that Manchester United will look at signing Kudus if they fail in getting Rasmus Hojlund. That link seems anonymous at the moment because United are pushing hard to sign the latter.
Arsenal have two left-footed forwards in their squad – Bukayo Saka and former Chelsea player Kai Havertz. It would make sense if they are not going to push very hard for the Kudus deal.
Chelsea, on the other hand, only have one left-footed winger/forward in their squad – Noni Madueke. Hakim Ziyech is there too but we won’t be surprised if the Moroccan leaves before the end of this window.
So, one can imagine why the Blues are offering a convincing package to sign Kudus. The prospective fee to get this deal done is revealed to be around £40m.
That price range is quite standard for the current market situation. The 22-year-old Ghana international is a versatile player who can play as a right winger, a number 10 and a false nine. He has played as a wide midfielder in a flat 4-4-2 system as well.
Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino, who is concerned about the lack of options he has in central midfield, can use Kudus as a winger to start with and see how he progresses.

Although Madueke finished the last season well, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Kudus being ahead in the pecking order when it comes to left-footed forwards.
