As per journalist Alan Nixon (subscription required) (h/t Football London), Burnley are hoping to sign young Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen for £10m plus extras in this summer transfer window.

The newly-promoted side are working on agreeing a fee with the Blues to sign the Dutchman. The player is currently in the Chelsea pre-season squad in the USA.

Maatsen was on loan with the Clarets last season and played a key role in helping them win the Championship and get promoted to the Premier League.

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany played the Dutchman predominantly at left-back. There was one game in which he played as a centre-back too. In 42 appearances in all competitions last season, he scored four goals and assisted six (Transfermarkt).

Going out on loan hasn’t been new to Maatsen in the last few years. The 21-year-old spent the 2020/21 season at Charlton and the 2021/22 campaign at Coventry City. His current contract at Chelsea expires next summer (Transfermarkt).

Keeping the latter in mind, it makes sense to sell the player now if he is not in Mauricio Pochettino’s plans. There is no point keeping him in the books and letting him go for free in 12 months.

Knowing that Burnley are prepared to pay something around £10m, Chelsea should take it with both hands and run. Not many clubs would offer that sort of a deal for the player.

Moreover, the Blues have good options at left-back in the squad. One would expect Ben Chilwell to be the first choice in that department. Marc Cucurella is also an option while Levi Colwill can play there as well.

All of this adds to the caveat that Maatsen is better off going to the Lancashire-based club as soon as possible.
